Walk this way

Francine Gacrama - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - If athleisure trends are any indication, sneakers are here to stay — and with good reason.

Lifestyle brand Gola makes its way back to Manila via the same people that brought us Brazilian brands Ipanema, Rider and Grendha. “I had Gola in my sights some time ago and someone else had the distribution rights but we were always in the background contacting them,” says Francisco Elizalde, president of ELRO Retail Corporation. “We saw a need for a brand not necessarily US-centric, but rather very European. We felt that the whole origin story plus the history of the brand had a story to tell, therefore this made it easy for us to market the brand properly.”

The UK-based brand dates back to 1905 and continues to distinguish itself with its classic and iconic styles. At the forefront of the line is the Harrier, which was originally created in 1968 for training and sports. The updated version is equipped in leather and suede details giving it an edge over its predecessor. Gola understands timeless pieces and the same could be said of the Bullet. The design celebrates its 40th anniversary since its launch in 1976 so it isn’t a surprise that the shoe continues to be a bestseller in the world of footwear. The retro design has made a comeback and was launched with the SS16 collection to reintroduce it to a new wave of consumers.

In line with the two core styles, Gola unveils four distinct looks — Classic, Sporty, Trendy and Edgy — along with four new personalities to represent each group. Celebrity mom Kelly Misa, Loyola Meralco Sparks football player Anton del Rosario, actress Carla Humphries and actor Paolo Paraiso took the stage at the Gola media launch last June 21.

The Classic pieces have a simple and laidback vibe, which lets you dress in comfort while still allowing you to maintain a polished sense of style. The pieces feature single-color-toned sneakers with a breathable or monochromatic outsole that, in turn, makes for a versatile collection. If you’re one that goes after functionality and style then Gola’s Sporty line is the one to look out for. The pairs come in bold tones, sturdy rubber soles with a more athletic profile while also carrying the trademark Gola stripes. Fancy a pair that’s anything but ordinary? The Trendy line has a roster of zingy prints and vibrant shades that sets it apart from the entire collection. Meanwhile the Edgy line is designed for individuals looking to go against the grain with frisky and eccentric designs.

And with this, the British brand asks you, “Which Gola are you?”
