MANILA, Philippines - It’s the new generation’s dream—a social media account you decided to do for kicks snow-balling into a worldwide phenomenon. But that’s exactly what Toni Potenciano and Gisella Velasco of Fly Art Productions found themselves with exactly one year ago, when they set up an Instagram account and started working on a deceptively-simple-but-surprisingly-flexible premise: hip-hop lyrics on some of history’s greatest art.
Through that formula, we got mash-ups like Jay and Bey graining on that #surfboardt all over a Jack Vettriano, Nicki Minaj taming her anaconda all over a John Collier, and Kanye West asking “What does Webster say about soul?” on Picasso’s “Guernica.” It blew up and went viral, as awesome things tend to do in the 2010s, and suddenly they were all over the Internet, from BuzzFeed to Billboard.com. They were even gracious enough to do the invites for Young STAR’s 18th birthday party, #YSProm in May of this year.
It’s been months since Fly Art merchandise has been available worldwide, but tonight they’re launching in Manila. In Twelfth House in the famous Cubao X, they’re throwing a party to celebrate “one year of trying to be cool, the Internet, music, and art.” We’re up all night to get lucky—and you might as well get Fly Art merch to look extra ***Flawless.
