How to make it

IS THIS IT? - Sam Potenciano - The Philippine Star

Flex your DIY muscle for a change. This holiday season, consider these out-of-the-box gift ideas from some of the coolest young creatives.

CUSTOMIZED SHIRT

Rio Jorolan, The 1019

“I’m obsessed with personalizing button-downs as gifts to people close to me. For my dad’s birthday, for instance, I had one of his drawings embroidered on chambray, his favorite kind of button-down fabric. Needless to say, he loved it!

“However, I know that embroidery is not that accessible or easy for a lot of people to do (and can be kind of pricey too). So as an alternative this Christmas, I suggest doing iron-ons or stencils! Pick an element about the person you are gifting and be creative about it. Get one of his or her old button-downs (or have one made, as I did!) and add that iron-on/stencil creation. Easy-peasy, unique and thoughtful all at once. Best Christmas gift ever.”

1. Find an old button-down or better yet, have one made

2. Brainstorm your stencil or iron-on’s design

3. Start drawing or tracing the design out onto iron-on paper

4. Iron the design onto the fabric

5. Wrap, ribbon, give!

SHRINK PLASTIC JEWELRY

By Mansy Abesamis, Hey Kessy

1. Make sure you have the following tools and materials ready before you begin: white or clear shrink film, markers, puncher, scissors, basic jewelry findings, mighty bond, and an oven toaster.

2. Draw your designs on the film. They should be at least three times bigger than the accessory size that you want since the film will shrink after baking.

3. Cut out the designs, and then punch holes where you want to hang them.

4. Bake the pieces at 150°C for three minutes.

5. Wait for the pieces to flatten before removing from the oven. (They will naturally curl in the process of baking, but they’ll flatten themselves back as they get smaller.)

6. Let them cool down for a few minutes.

6. Use Mighty Bond to attach the pieces to ring and earring findings. You can also attach them to a necklace.

PRINTED JOURNAL

By Kaity Chua, The Wareshop

“Notebooks can sometimes be an extension of your creative mind. They are where most ideas from the most brilliant geniuses have first emerged into the real world. Because we use our free hand in using this analog item, it is always more personal than any electronic device designed for the same purpose. What if we could make them even more personal, where every part of it was truly our own?”

1. Take a walk with your favorite photo-capturing device.

2. Make sure to capture a range of scenic photos.

3. Choose your best pic and crop it horizontally to fit a half letter-sized paper.

4. Print it on some high-quality letter-sized paper and cut it horizontally, leaving just your image.

5. Get around 20 pieces (or more, depending on how many pages you want) of letter-sized paper and cut them horizontally.

6. Stack them all together along with your printed pic facing outwards.

 7. Trace an imaginary line vertically in the middle of the stack and staple it twice on the top and bottom area. The orientation of the staples must also be vertical.

8. Fold the stack along the vertical line with your pic as the top portion.

9. Enjoy your new notebook or give it to someone close to you!
