Boys will be boys

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - In the age where the Internet has killed the radio star, it’s extremely rare to see a radio show figure its way into popular culture. But Boys Night Out (BNO), a Magic 89.9 outfit that comprises DJs Tony Toni, Slick Rick, and Sam YG, has been around for years yet remains one of radio’s enduringly popular shows.

Young folks, in particular, continue to turn to BNO for their deeply honest take on dating and relationships. BNO’s reach has even gone beyond their avid listeners—words like MOMOL (make out-make out lang) and catchphrases like “Yeaaaah, man” that trace their origins to the show have comfortably found their place into today’s vernacular.

With a collective sense of humor that could convert even the biggest grouch, BNO has collaborated with teen brand SM Youth’s Tee Culture for a series of graphic tees that are easy on the eyes and heavy on the haha’s. Cotton shirts prominently feature some of BNO’s running gags like their bellhop bell, alter-egos such as Sam YG’s Guru Shivaker, and weekly segments like “Teagang Thursday.”

But one need not listen to their daily show (although that’s of course, highly recommended) just to appreciate their cheeky humor. Other graphic tees in their collection showcase catchphrases like “Kapag may alak, may balak” and “Saktong landi lang”; not exactly everyone’s cup of tea(gang?) but definitely attention-grabbing. That’s one thing you can guarantee when wearing one of BNO’s Tee Culture offerings. Much like BNO’s notorious humor, not much needs to be said for one to get a spirited reaction. — Margarita Buenaventura
