Heavy storms in Poland kill 5 people, injure dozens more

Associated Press

WARSAW — Heavy storms have brought down trees and other objects, killing five people in Poland, including two teenage girls at a scouting camp, and injuring dozens of other people.

The storm hit an area of northern Poland lying between Gdansk, on the Baltic Sea, and city of Bydgoszcz.

Polish media reported yesterday the two girls killed at camp, 13 and 14 years old, died when trees fell onto their tents. The other victims included a 48-year-old man who was crushed to death by a tree and a younger man killed in his tent.

A 56-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on a building, causing part of a chimney to fall on her.

The storms also cause electricity cutoffs to nearly 340,000 people.
