Identification

THAT DOES IT - Korina Sanchez - The Freeman

In a recently conducted online poll at the Philippine Star website, 71 percent of those who participated voted not to agree with the DILG's plan to apply stickers to homes they would identify to be drug-free. Of course, that classification would depend on the DILG and this administration's supposed standards. What exactly is the purpose of doing this? Is it to identify the "clean homes"? To humiliate or ostracize the homes without these stickers? To identify what households support President Duterte's war on drugs? To identify possible targets of the police in a revived "tokhang" campaign, or the gangs of Messianic vigilantes who believe they are doing the country a favor by killing suspected, alleged or even actual drug addicts?

I really do not see the rationale for this. It only endangers the households without these stickers. It violates the right to privacy of homes and families. When then Mayor Lim of Manila marked houses of suspected or known drug addicts, the Court of Appeals deemed the action unconstitutional. Isn't this exactly what the DILG wants to do? What is next for the DILG, should this be implemented? Households without social diseases?

Households that pay the right taxes? Households that supported Duterte? Why don't they put stickers on the homes of politicians that are supposedly "clean", so everyone will know where they live, and also identify those who are "not clean"? Because for every sticker the DILG would apply to identify a household, they automatically identify those without as well, for whatever reason they see fit.

Hitler ordered that the Star of David be placed on the clothing of Jews during World War II. This is for his military to quickly identify them, and dispose of them to labor or concentration camps. How different are these stickers? Did Sec. Sueno get the idea from the first Passover where doorways that had blood smeared on them were spared by the angel of death? This idea is too open for abuse by so many sectors, which we already know can happen in this administration. How safe are households that will not be given that sacred sticker?

This administration's obsession with identifying those that they deem are against everything they believe in is just getting out of hand. Identification, that's the first step. Is segregation, or worse, like execution or extrajudicial killing to follow?
