Strong aftershock rocks Surigao anew

Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  A strong aftershock hit Surigao del Norte again on Tuesday night.

The epicenter of the magnitude 4.8 aftershock was traced seven kilometers southwest of San Jose town in Dinagat, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake was felt at Intensity 5 in Surigao City.

Phivolcs said an Intensity 5 quake is strong and “generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors.”

Surigao del Norte and Leyte continue to experience aftershocks from the magnitude 6.7 quake that hit Surigao on Feb. 10.

On March 5, a person died and 40 others injured when an aftershock with a magnitude of 5.9 rocked the province. Aftershocks continued on March 6, the strongest a magnitude 3.7, which was felt at Intensity 2 in Surigao City.

Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum had warned that aftershocks could last for months.

Solidum urged local officials and state engineers to check houses and buildings damaged by the quake for structural integrity. He said strong aftershocks could cause some structures to collapse.
