WATCH: Youth group sings national anthem after Scarborough flag planting

Alexis Romero - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino youth group Kalayaan Atin Ito on Sunday successfully planted the Philippine flag at the Scarborough shoal in commemoration of the country's 118th Independence Day.

Chinese Coast Guard ships blocked the Filipino group as they attempted to plant the Philippine flag on the shoal to show that the country still has sovereignty over the disputed shoal.

The group also attempted to plant the United Nations flag to highlight its Convention on the Law of the Sea.

An American eyewitness said that the expedition was a success despite an encounter between the Chinese Coast Guard and the Filipino youth group as the latter was able to plant a small Philippine flag on the shoal.

The group proceeded to sing the Philippine national anthem after claiming victory. – Patricia Lourdes Viray
