WATCH: Dubai's Mall of the World bests Manila's Mall of Asia

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, Philippines may have a name to match its size, but a Dubai-based developer is building another mall to rival its reputation.

Mall of Asia, or MOA to local residents, occupies 4.38 million square feet, but the United Arab Emirates' Mall of the World will feature a shopping center occupying 8 million square feet, taking the form of an extended retail street network spanning 7 kilometers.

The world's next largest shopping mall is in the heart of the world's first temperature-controlled, mall-city of eponymous name with a total area of 48 million square feet.

"Additional districts within the project will include a wellness dedicated zone catering to medical tourists, a cultural celebration district as well as a wide range of hospitality options comprising 20,000 hotel rooms catering to all types of tourists," development firm Dubai Holdings said on YouTube.

Mall of the World is expected to have 180 million visitors a year once completed.

The New South China Mall in Dongguan, China has a land area of 7.1 million square feet and is presently the world's largest mall.

The Philippines, meanwhile, currently has three of the world's ten largest shopping malls. SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City is the world's fourth largest, while SM North EDSA in Quezon City is fifth.

MOA is currently the tenth largest in the world, but the Mall of the World will push down its rank to 11th.
