Zen makes medical tourism happen

- Lester Gopela Hallig -

MANILA, Philippines - As a major medical tourism destination, the Philippines is given the chance to show to the world how advanced its medical facilities and expertise are. For a country already recognized by foreigners for its professionalism and knowledge in the medical field, it is truly encouraging news.

It also helps that our country’s medical tourism offerings include affordability, efficiency, and the trademark Filipino hospitality. Throw in the tourist attractions that the Philippines has to offer, from hotels to beaches, and you have got a winning package.

If you need an example, look no further than the Zen Institute. Not only does this medical spa provide all of the aforementioned features, it also has the distinction of having a clinic right inside Sofitel Philippine Plaza’s Le Spa. Medical and tourism, pure and simple.

A proponent of non-invasive surgery, Zen Institute founder and head doctor Dr. Mary Jane Torres Valdecañas says the clinic’s location, right within Sofitel’s premises, is an advantage in itself.

“The Zen Institute holds special premium on a stress-free environment. At Sofitel, clients can be away from the hustle and bustle of the city without even leaving the city,” Valdecañas says. “It actually defines us as a medical spa.”

The medical spa concept was created by Valdecañas herself, who adds that this idea brings together European technology and Asian culture. She says, “Spa embraces a lifestyle. Combined with non-surgical medical expertise, the Zen Institute becomes a sanctuary for those who come back to improve themselves. They stop seeing this as a clinic but more as part of their lifestyle.”

The doctor, who is a pioneer in the field of body sculpting called Resonax, stresses that scalpels are not allowed in the medical spa. She says, “We minimize the pain as much as possible. The idea is to make our clients feel good about themselves. When they come here, we make them feel relaxed. I think that is part of our spa component.”

Among the services offered are: facial contouring, Zen Natural Lift, Endolift, skin rejuvenation, Botox, body sculpting, nutritional counseling, men’s skin treatment, hair revitalization, pampering spa treatments, skin pampering for pregnant women, scarless instant facelift, and the signature treatment called Resonax.

Resonax is Europe’s latest non-surgical technology for face contouring and body sculpting, and is exclusive only at the Zen Institute.

“Resonax is a very relaxing treatment. Its basic technology is radio frequency, so not much heat is involved and does not pose any disturbance during the procedure. Even after the treatment, you can go do your usual activities or go on vacation,” she explains.

The doctor notes that foreigners and balikbayans (and some locals, too) have been making frequent visits to the medical spa. They go about their businesses while assured that their quest for self-improvement is being realized.

For a medical tourism destination, the Zen Institute paves the way for the country to enjoy global recognition in the field. Medical travelers not only get to visit the Philippines for their procedures but also to take pleasure in the local tourist destinations.
