Vessel returns to Cebu port due to engine problem

PURPLE SHADES - May B. Miasco - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A vessel owned by Trans-Asia Shipping Lines experienced engine problems as it departed for Cagayan de Oro Friday night, prompting the vessel to return to port.

All 690 passengers disembarked safely and would be reimbursed for their tickets.

Commodore Agapito Bibat, chief of Coast Guard Station Cebu, told The Freeman MV Trans Asia 10, a passenger and cargo vessel, left the Cebu City port at past 8 p.m. At almost 11 p.m., the Coast Guard Station received communications from the vessel that it was experiencing engine problems and would be returning to Cebu City.

The problem in the engine was spotted just as the vessel was travelling off Naga City in southern Cebu.

Bibat said the operator decided to return to port so as not to compromise the safety of passengers.

The operators were advised to file a marine protest before the Maritime Industry Authority. The vessel may lose its passenger ship safety certificate. (FREEMAN)
