Welcome to... Star Wars Land

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, George Lucas created worlds so fantastic that fans dreamed of going there.

With Bob Iger’s announcement at D23 of a 14-acre Star Wars Land in the works — the largest single-theme expansion yet of Disney theme parks — some people were already preparing to pack their bags for the first flight. But while the project is realistically projected for 2018 and beyond, the plans — revealed in artist drawings that drew whoops of awe from the audience — call for an immersive Star Wars experience that expands on Disneyland’s back-lot area and Orlando park, allowing guests to wander through a “jaw-dropping new world,” stroll through pirate city Mos Eisley, ride the Millennium Falcon, experience Space Mountain Hyperspace, mingle with Animatronic Banthas and other creatures, and battle Stormtroopers.

“We are so grateful to George Lucas for trusting us with his creation,” Iger told the D23 crowd. “We’re bringing Star Wars to life in a big way. We knew it needed to be big, great, and as thrilling as the movies, so we are transporting guests to a new planet: a 14-acre world of rides, fantasy adventure and fun. Every restaurant and store will be staffed and operated by ‘inhabitants’ of this world. You’ll run into all the droids and beasts you’re so familiar with — and there will be a cantina!”

Tapping into the power of Industrial Light and Magic and Lucasfilm — with access to original plans and designs from the first three movies — this promises to be a heck of a ride for Star Wars fans, and a “whole new galaxy to explore,” promised Iger.

In the meantime, Star Tours, the popular Star Wars attraction at Disney, soon will be updated with Force Awakens features; an updated Jedi Academy will be offered to train kids; and Star Wars Launch Bay will be added to showcase Star Wars memorabilia like props and costumes from the films.
