‘Ayokong maging assuming’

The Philippine Star

Dear Tita Witty,

A co-worker has been getting quite close to me for the past few months. Ayokong maging feeling kaya inisip ko na lang na he’s just being friendly. One morning, I found an anonymous sweet note in my drawer. I had a hunch that it was from him because a few days later, I noticed that he’s been, well, “friendlier.” I can’t help but notice that he stares at me. That he hums love songs when we’re left alone at the office. That he teases me when we bump into each other. That he tries to compliment my work. That he tries to make me laugh when I feel gloomy. In short, assuming na ‘ko.

Sinusubukan kong lumayo kasi natatakot akong mahulog sa kanya tapos malalaman ko na wala lang pala ‘yun.

What should I do, Tita?

Love,

Assuming Yet Afraid

P.S. NBSB po ako and I’m turning 30 this year.

Dear Assuming Yet Afraid,

I applaud you for acknowledging na assuming ka nga. At least you know where you stand.

Chill ka lang. Give it a few weeks. If he doesn’t make a concrete move by then, he’s just messing with you. And by concrete, I mean asking you out for coffee or dinner, offering to take you home (your home, not his — kaloka), calling and/or texting during non-office hours/days, etc. A handwritten note is indeed very sweet, pero anonymous talaga?! Parang di na keri ‘yung mga ganung ganap  at your age, te! The same goes with “humming love songs” and “teasing.” Hindi na tayo high school.

Nakakakilig, alam ko. But you said it yourself — natatakot ka na wala lang pala. Sa ngayon, mukhang wala nga lang.

So when you see him at work on Monday, ‘wag hanggang batok ang ngiti, okay?

XOXO,

Tita Witty
