Pinoy Twitter discovers #realtalk
MANILA, Philippines - #Realtalk is a derivative of the ebonics phrase “keeping it real,” which loosely translates to: “I’m going to be honest in the most unnecessarily rude way possible.” This is a concept that feels right at home on Twitter, like a zoo animal finding its natural habitat. This week, #realtalk trended on Pinoy Twitter, our unofficial outlet of “keeping it real,” which is otherwise frowned upon in real Pinoy life. So brace yourselves, rest of the world: Things are about to get real.
Ebola virus outbreak causes mild scare
OFWs in Africa are now being sent home, as the continent struggles to contain the biggest Ebola virus outbreak in history. Naturally, Pinoy Twitter went on a mini-panic this week, fearing our well-traveled “modern heroes” may bring home a deadly contagion. Officials at the Department of Health and Bureau of Human Quarantine insist that they’re on top of the situation, however, so I guess we can chill for now.
Obscure holiday alert:“Friendship Day” happened
It was International Friendship Day this past Sunday, as Twitter was quick to remind us all. This should not be confused with Best Friend Day, which was on June 8. I guess Casual Friend Day is next, followed by Acquaintance Day, and People Who Look Vaguely Familiar Day.
Nicki Minaj sits on top of the charts, Internet memes
Despite Nicki Minaj’s much-awaited Anaconda debuting at number one on iTunes this week, as celebrated in the worldwide trending #AnacondaNumberOne, the album’s most important distinction remains having the most memed cover art in recent memory. From the Lion King, to the two “o’s” in Google, Nicki Minaj’s prominent derriere has been everywhere. Anyone can top the iTunes charts, but not everyone can be a squatting, bootified Statue of Liberty is all I’m saying.
