BEST OF THE WEEK: Gay cadets, yellow lanes, and does everybody hate Ruffa?

- The Philippine Star

Fight of the week: The people of Twitter vs.  Ruffa Gutierrez

Ruffa Gutierrez is one of the few celebrity Twitter users who fights back. This week, she faced a fresh wave of attacks from the Twitterverse. It started innocently enough: she tweeted “RIP Dolphy,” which spread like wildfire. Some celebrities with “reliable” sources disputed the claim, prompting the lynch mob to send her hateful messages, recounting her past Twitter horror stories. The thing is, she was right in proclaiming Dolphy’s passing, after all. Tweeps owe her an apology, but the word is Ruffa was so disappointed that she walked out and decided to join Plurk.

Superhero of the week: Darna

In a recent interview on a Japanese talk show, the Korean boy band Big Bang revealed that their favorite superhero is our very own Darna. We’re not really sure because the voiceover was in Japanese, but we suspect so because we kept hearing “sheksi” amid images of Marian Rivera morphing into her revealing costume. We’re jealous enough of Marian for her red-hot career and even hotter boyfriend, but now she gets Big Bang? Keri lang yan. Meynteyn.

Bibo kids of the week: The Iglesia ni Cristo

The Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) was recently awarded three Guinness World Records. The religious organization provided a whole-day free medical and dental mission in the slums of Tondo, and broke the records for the largest dental health check, most blood pressure readings, and most blood glucose level tests. (Gee, Guinness records are so… specific.) The total number of procedures reached over 17,000 tests, along with minor surgeries and other operations. It’s refreshing to see a church like this — INC does support the RH bill, and it’s apparent they believe in science. In any case, Pinoy croc Lolong entered the Guinness Book of World Records last week, so it seems Filipinos are on a roll. Perhaps we could break a world record for breaking the most world records?

Champion of the week: coL. CC Filipino

In the recently concluded Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 2 EVO 2012, Filipino Ryan Ramirez (a.k.a. “coL.CC Filipino Champ”) won the championship, besting seven other competitors in a showdown reminiscent of a Pacquiao fight, if Pacquiao fights were geek fests that required little physical fitness. We didn’t know such a tournament existed, but since the winner is a kababayan, it’s a good opportunity for us to brag about our Filipino-ness to everyone, until he does something that will shame us, leading us to disown him. After the win, we’re told Ramirez expected Alodia Gosiengfiao to greet him with a congratulatory kiss, but instead he was greeted by his totally tech-clueless mother.

Wrong decision of the week:  EDSA’s yellow lanes

EDSA traffic has worsened, thanks to MMDA’s smart-ass idea of banning buses and trucks from using flyovers, tunnels, and underpasses. An ABS-CBN reporter found that a bus trip from North Avenue to Ayala Avenue now takes almost two hours. I guess this creates a picture-perfect DOT ad of “Sightseeing. More Fun in the Philippines.”

Cadets of the week: The gay community

The US repealed this year the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which prohibited openly homosexual folk from serving in the military. And now, the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) says categorically that they do not prohibit embers of the gay community from joining the institution. A spokesperson for the PMA even mentioned some gay members who have survived the academy’s rigorous training, and have graduated successfully. However, they said that these members still have to follow rules and regulations, and are not allowed to cross-dress. Does this mean they can’t change the uniform from the traditional green fatigue to floral prints? How sad.
