If you could look into your future, would you want to know how your story ends?

WORDS WORTH - Mons Romulo - The Philippine Star

At one time or the other, like me, you may have wondered about your future. Wanting to know what’s in store for us is normal, but up to what extent or how far would we really want to know about the future?

I asked some personalities to tell us if they were given a book about the story of their life, would they want to read until the last page?

Vina Morales, actress, singer

No. Where is the excitement if I already know how my life story goes? I have always believed that life is a journey. I want my life story to be a surprise — just how God planned it to be.

Arnold Clavio, TV and radio personality

No. I don’t believe in the end.

Isabella Jose, theater actress

I’d rather not know the end. Knowing how things play out might just paralyze me with fear, paranoia or spoil the rest of the chapters. I would much rather turn each page and live my life with rawness, curiosity and courage. I believe in God, in His blueprint and the fact that all things eventually fall into place. Why preempt the story? There’s this quote by Milan Kundera, which I love and it’s become a mantra of sorts: “We live everything as it comes, without warning, like an actor going on cold. And what can life be worth if the first rehearsal for life is life itself?”

Josie Dela Cruz, Postmaster General

Yes, I would read it because I’m curious to know what the ending will be.

Tessa Alindogan, interior designer and artist

No. I will certainly not read the ending. At this point I assume I still have a long way to go. I wake up each morning with the promise to make today a happy day, for myself, the ones I love and the others around me. I have always aimed to live my life to the fullest: savoring each and every blessing that comes my way; enjoying the many surprises, big or small, that life has in store for me and gladly embracing the bounty that the universe offers. So, why spoil the surprise?

Davao Rep. Karlo Nograles

Tempting! But I wouldn’t. I think if I read the end and didn’t like it, I might dedicate half my life trying to change what is already written versus making the most of every day. I believe there is a purpose for not knowing and that is to live life as it comes, trusting that there is a reason for everything.

Liz Almoro-Aliwalas, logistician/EVP, Lalaine Logistics International Inc.

As much as I hate surprises, I would not read how the book of the story of my life ends because I wouldn’t want my actions and decisions to be dictated by my subconscious. I want to live life not knowing what circumstances lie ahead. Knowing the future eliminates the adventure, the challenge and the mystery that life brings.

Mye Cruz, creative director and owner, Adworks Graphic Designs Manila

I want to live life as carefree as possible. I wouldn’t want to be stressed out trying to change or live up to my ending. I would rather take life day by day or page by page, enjoying and learning from every decision I make.

Von Pessumal, Ateneo basketball team

I probably wouldn’t. I just feel like knowing my own ending would ruin all the fun. What’s a good story without the element of surprise?
