While also LMP-Visayas VP: Diamante vows to double efforts for constituents

NOTES FROM THE EDITOR - Gregg M. Rubio - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Tuburan Mayor Democrito Diamante Jr. has vowed to double his effort in delivering services to his constituents in his last term in office while at the same time serving the League of Municipalities of the Philippines.

Aside from being president of LMP-Cebu Chapter for second term, Diamante was recently reelected unopposed as the league's vice president for the Visayas, also for second term.

"Giganahan man siguro sila sa atoang serbisyo," he said.

Diamante is the only one who got reelected to the new set of LMP national officers during an election held at New World Hotel in Makati City.

Javier, Leyte Mayor Leonardo Javier Jr. is now the LMP national vice president for operations after Socorro, Oriental Mindoro Mayor Fe Brondial replaced him as national president.

As LMP vice president for the Visayas, Diamante has to attend to the concerns of the 369 towns in the Visayas. Cebu has 44 municipalities.

"Pagka-human sa akoang term, balik ko sa private. Tama ang nine years akoang ma-contribute sa Tuburan," he said.

Even if he belongs to the Liberal Party, Diamante earlier asked Cebu mayors to rally behind the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.

In fact, Tuburan was the first in Cebu province and in the entire country to organize residents into Alsa Droga to join Duterte's war against illegal drugs.

Patterned after the Alsa Masa (masses rising), the now defunct anti-communist vigilante group based in Davao City, the Alsa Droga was organized ahead of the call of Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Ismael Sueno to revive the concept of the Alsa Masa to make citizens across the country-and not just in Davao-more involved in anti-crime efforts, but in a "non-violent way."

Diamante said that while Sueno had announced his plan to revive Alsa Masa, they have already started in their town and launched Alsa Droga.

However, Diamante said that unlike Alsa Masa, the Alsa Droga will be a complementary force to help the police in curbing the spread of drugs in the barangays.

The Alsa Droga volunteers will be the proverbial eyes-and-ears of the authorities in their respective barangays by monitoring those involved in using and selling drugs, noting the presence of unfamiliar faces in their areas and informing the police and barangay officials about their observations.

The group will also assist the police in anti-drug information and education campaign at the barangay level and provide other data about the illegal activities in their barangays. (FREEMAN)
