MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University showed no sign of rustiness after dismantling its rival De La Salle University, 25-18, 25-19, 25-19 on Wednesday to take game one of the UAAP women's volleyball finals at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Lady Eagles shrugged off a 20-day layoff and easily thumped the Lady Spikers with the explosive performance of reigning MVP Alyssa Valdez who finished with 25 points.

The game became easier for the Katipunan-based squad as they capitalized on the absence of Lady Spikers' main gunner Ara Galang who was out for the season due to torn ACL and MCL.

Ateneo is a win away from a back-to-back championship.

Meanwhile, La Salle needs to win three straight games as the defending champion is enjoying a thrice-to-beat advantage.
