MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion Ateneo survived University of the Philippines as it eked out a hard-earned 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-11 win to stay unbeaten in five games in the UAAP Season 77 women's volleyball tournament at resumption of action at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

Having difficulty finding their groove after the Christmas break, the Lady Eagles found themselves stretched to the limit by the game Lady Maroons but mustered enough strength in the end to escape with the victory in the thrilling five-set encounter.

"Out of focus kasi (because of the) holidays, I'm really thankful that we won kahit most of us were off," said Ateneo skipper Alyssa Valdez after the escape act in the match that lasted one hour and 52 minutes.

The Lady Eagles stood one game behind rival and fellow unbeaten team La Salle, which hiked its record to 6-0 via an easy 25-6, 25-16, 25-11 romp of winless University of the East in the second game.

Valdez, the reigning MVP, punched in 25 points, including three blocks and two aces, to lead the Lady Eagles while Bea de Leon and Amy Ahomiro chipped in 12 and 11, respectively.
