Lady Maroons stun Tigresses; Lady Tams prevail

MANILA, Philippines - University of the Philippines dished out top form to shock University of Santo Tomas, 26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17, while Far Eastern U swept University of the East, 25-14, 25-13, 25-19 in the UAAP women's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

Skipper Nicole Tiamzon took over and fired 19 hits, including three blocks and produced nine digs, while Angeli Araneta and Kathy Bersola combined for 30 points for the Lady Maroons, who notched their first win after back-to-back setbacks.         ?       

"We tried to show that this is now a different UP team," said coach Jerry Yee, a multi-titled high school mentor who is now on his second season with the Diliman-based squad. "I let my players decide if they would want to win. So they played and got the victory. Everybody stepped up and worked hard. They deserve the win."      ?       

Rookie EJ Laure had 19 points and eight digs while Pam Lastimosa had five blocks for 13 hits for UST, which dropped to a four-way tie with the Lady Maroons, Lady Falcons and Lady Bulldogs at 1-2.      

?Shaya Adorador paced the Lady Warriors with 13 hits, including two service aces, and four digs, while Leuseht Dawis added five points. 

FEU, on the other hand, rebounded from a disappointing loss the last time out, outclassing the rookie-laden UE side to seize solo third at 2-1. ?       ?       

Bernadette Pons got back her old deadly form, while Toni Rose Basas and Jerilli Malabanan played their best games this season for FEU, which stayed within striking distance of unbeaten leaders Ateneo and La Salle (2-0).?       

Pons had two service aces to finish with 11 hits for the Lady Tamaraws, while Basas and Malabanan combined for 18 points. ? 

FEU is bracing a tough three-game stretch to end the year, against Adamson, La Salle and NU, which would define its first round campaign.        ?       

"I'm happy with this win but we really need to train hard and study our opponents well," said Lady Tamaraws mentor Shaq delos Santos. ?       

In men's play, Mark Alfafara and Romnick Rico combined for 29 hits as UST (3-0) defeated UP (1-2) 25-18, 25-11, 25-15, while Red Christensen and John Onia had 16 and 15 points, respectively, as La Salle (1-2) downed UE (0-3) 25-19, 25-19, 25-21.    ?
