During the 2014 Gatorade PBA Draft, Juneric Baloria couldn't hide his disappointment at being selected so late (30th overall by Blackwater Elite). The shooting guard for the Perpetual Help Altas, who has also been lighting it up in the PBA D-League with the Big Chill Superchargers, was figured by many in the media to be chosen in the second round. However, much to the shock of many, he fell that far in the draft. Even as his name was announced, he struggled to smile.

I witnessed history Saturday. I marked the date, August 16, 2014, the place, The Arena in San Juan City, and the event, the NCAA All-Star. It's actually the first ever All-Star event in the 90-year history of the NCAA. So we could all say everything that happened for the whole seven hours is historic.

Letran is teetering on the brink of this season being a lost cause until they find something, or someone, to turn this ship around. A record of 1-4 is not something a finalist should tote even if they lost a big piece down the middle. Everyone should pick up the slack. But what has gone terribly wrong with the Knights?

When playing JRU, opponents know their main men are Philip Paniamogan, Jaycee Asuncion and Michael Mabulac, which is why defenses are geared towards stopping them. Other players like Teytey Teodoro, Jed Salaveria, Dave Sanchez, Nonoy Benavides, Marco Balagtas, Gio Lasquety and Abdul Razakwahab have to step up too because that is the only way this team will win and go deep in this NCAA Season 90.

Last Friday, I thought I witnessed an incandescent shooting display when San Beda's Baser Amer, Anthony Semerad and Dan Sara shoot a combined 9-9 from 3-point range in the first half to blow away the shell shocked Mapua Cardinals.

In my NCAA preview, I said that the biggest difference between a championship - a fifth-straight one for San Beda - or not is stopping Ola Adeogun. That has never been easy. But in a year wherein San Beda is beatable, teams will have to be highly creative in stopping the Red Lions.

We've already written about how San Beda is the hands-down favorite to win a fifth consecutive NCAA title. We also mentioned that some teams will contend - Jose Rizal University, University of Perpetual Help, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, College of Saint Benilde, Arellano University and Lyceum of the Philippines University.

The road to a five-peat for San Beda rests on the shoulders of one man - Ola Adeogun. The Nigerian center is the X-Factor in which no other team in the NCAA can match, much less has an answer for. And with the road to the title cleared of any Raymond Almazans, even with a depowered Red Lions team, San Beda is a heavy favorite to win it all again.
