Blue Jays turn back Orioles, keep AL lead

-

TORONTO – Aaron Hill hit an RBI single in the 11th inning to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 5-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, maintaining the Canadians’ lead in the American League.

Rod Barajas led off the 11th with a base hit. After one out, Barajas took second on Marco Scutaro’s sacrifice and scored on Hill’s single to right-center.

It was a wild final two innings for Hill, who homered in the 10th after his error in the top half helped the Orioles take a 4-3 lead.

Baltimore has lost five straight to sink to the bottom of the AL East Division standings.

In St. Petersburg, Florida, veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield improved to 20-5 in his career against Tampa Bay as the Red Sox won, 10-6, over the Rays.

Wakefield is 10-3 at Tropicana Field, where the Red Sox won for just the second time in their past 13 games.

Wakefield struck out five in as many innings. The 20 wins against the Rays are his most against any team.

In Minneapolis, Joakim Soria returned to his All-Star closing form for Kansas City, getting the last five outs to hold off Minnesota, 10-7, in 11 innings. (AP)
