‘Disinterested’ Abueva, Almazan booted from Gilas
MANILA, Philippines — Representing the country is both an honor and a responsibility.
Raymond Almazan and Calvin Abueva learned this the hard way after being cut from the Gilas Pilpinas pool.
Head coach Chot Reyes said Monday that Almazan and Abueva were dropped from the pool after failing to attend practices.
"It's already our third practice at hindi pa sila nagpapakita," Reyes said.
"It's simply a matter of disinterest. I guess they're not interested so we have to move on. We can't wait for those guys," he added.
The two players were part of the Gilas team that emerged victorious in the 1st leg of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, defeating Japan and Chinese-Taipei.
Gilas Pilipinas will now rely on veterans Jayson Castro, Gabe Norwood, Japeth Aguilar, June Mar Fajardo, Allein Maliksi and young bloods Kiefer Ravena, Kevin Alas, Jio Jalalon, Roger Pogoy, Matthew Wright, Carl Bryan Cruz, Mac Belo and Troy Rosario.
