Ceres Negros seeks big upset of Aussies Match tonight

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Ceres Negros FC seeks to make the most of its opportunity to go deeper into the AFC Champions League Qualifiers as it tries to pull off a massive upset against Australian side Brisbane Roar today in a challenging second-stage match at Queensland Sport and Athletics Center Stadium in Queensland.

The Busmen go into the 7 p.m. away outing (5 p.m. in Manila) clearly the underdog against the Roar, giving up the advantage in experience, home edge and match fitness.

“For us it’s a good experience to play these kind of games,” said Ceres coach Risto Vidakovic. “Brisbane is a tough team. They play in a high level league, bigger level than what we have in the Philippines. So for us it’s a test to see where we are and where can we be. We just have to enjoy the game tomorrow (today).”

The reigning Philippine champs advanced to the second stage after beating Mynmar outfit Shan United on penalties, 4-3, after a 1-1 tie through extra time.

That’s actually their first game this year and in contrast, Brisbane, which boasts of a high-powered roster led by Socceroos veterans Bret Holman and Matt Mckay and standout Corey Gameiro, are already halfway through their season.
