MANILA, Philippines — La Salle didn’t look elsewhere for a new coach following the departure of Aldin Ayo as it reportedly elevated his assistant, Louie Gonzalez, into the vacant position.

Online reports said Gonzalez was tasked to take over during a meeting last Friday with top patron Danding Cojuangco.

Sought for comment yesterday, Gonzalez begged off, deferring to the official announcement from La Salle.

Gonzalez served as Ayo’s assistant since their championship stint at Letran over in the NCAA, winning one UAAP title together when they jumped ship to DLSU then finishing runner-up to Ateneo in Season 80.

He even called the shots when Ayo served a one-game suspension in their maiden campaign with DLSU Season 79, steering the Archers to victory over rival Ateneo in an elimination encounter.

Ayo bolted the Archers’ camp after the recent tourney, reportedly heading to University of Santo Tomas, where he will be reunited with Dominican friends.

Glen Capacio, who also didn’t join the coaching exodus, will reportedly serve as Gonzalez’s assistant with Siot Tanquingcen said to be coming in to join the coaching staff as well.

The Archers are picking up the pieces after their failed title retention campaign in Season 80 and the exits of Ayo and MVP Ben Mbala in the post-season.
