Bolts own gentle giant impresses June Mar Fajardo
MANILA, Philippines — He had languished in the bench for so long. But when called to try to neutralize the best in the league, Ken Bono did his part with clutch offensives in Meralco’s losing stand against June Mar Fajardo and the San Miguel Beermen.
Despite the ever-diminishing playing time and sometimes reduced to practice player, Bono, the former UAAP MVP awardee from Adamson, stayed in competitive form through sheer perseverance and hard work, hoping he would be called to do his share during a game.
“It really depends on the coach. I just have to be always ready,” said Bono.
Working on both ends of the court defending against the prolific Fajardo and going four-of-four from the perimeter, Bono provided the spark the Bolts used for a fightback, only to bow to SMB’s superior firepower.
“I just did my best to be able to help the team stop Fajardo. Actually, you really can’t stop Fajardo. The key is to contain him a little. If I was able to help, I’m thankful to coach Norman (Black) for the opportunity,” said Bono after the Bolts absorbed a 97-103 setback to the Beermen in the PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday.
Black, Fajardo and San Miguel coach Leo Austria all praised Bono for his effort.
“I’m happy for Ken. He did pretty well against June Mar,” said Black.
“Maganda ang bunot sa kanya and he played well. He deserves praises, respect,” said Fajardo.
“I really congratulated him because I know what he can do. He’s one of the best shooters among big men and if he will focus on his conditioning, I think he will be given playing time,” said Austria, Bono’s collegiate coach at Adamson.
