Lassiter inks new pact with Beermen

MANILA, Philippines — San Miguel coach Leo Austria can look forward to the 43rd PBA season knowing he has more than enough of what’s needed for the Beermen to stay on top.
Marcio Lassiter, whose steady hands have played a key role in the Beermen’s recent success, has signed a fresh three-year contract with the powerhouse team.
The deal was made public through the Beermen’s official Twitter account shortly before midnight of Saturday.
No details were divulged regarding the contract although it’s likely that Lassiter, a 30-year-old Fil-American, is getting what he deserves – the maximum salary of P420,000 a month.
If yes, then Lassiter, from San Francisco, California, and has been with San Miguel since 2012, will receive P15.1 million for the next three years.
He deserves every centavo he’s getting, having won five titles with SMB and being named four times to the All-Stars and earning slots to the 2012 PBA All-Rookie Team and 2013 PBA All-Defensive Team.
Austria should be extremely happy with the news that Lassiter isn’t going anywhere.
This means that San Miguel’s core, a starting unit that any PBA coach can always dream of, remains intact.
Also secured with the team are four-time MVP June Mar Fajardo, Arwind Santos, a former MVP himself, Alex Cabagnot and Chris Ross.
In less than six months, Fil-German Christian Standhardinger will get to join the team after serving out his contract with his old team in Hong Kong.
Standhardinger is this year’s No.1 draft pick in the PBA, and his entry into the Bermen’s lineup will only make the team deeper if not more dominant that it already is.
San Miguel has won five titles the past five years, including three straight Philippine Cup crowns. Last year, the Beermen came close to its second grand slam since 1989 but failed to make the finals of the Governors’ Cup.
With Lassiter finally securing a contract extension, and Standhardinger waiting in the wings, the Beermen will remain as the team to watch out for in the season scheduled to begin on Dec. 17.
