Cignal tries to blemish F2's immaculate record

MANILA, Philippines — Cignal takes its turn to scar F2 Logistics’ immaculate mark when they clash in the Chooks to Go-Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The HD Spikers have the talent and the experience to stop the Cargo Movers.

Imports Alexis Matthews of United States and Beth Carey of Australia are two of the league’s best middle blockers while Jovelyn Gonzaga, Paneng Mercado and Royse Tubino are all capable of lighting up the scoreboard.

Of course, veteran Rachel Anne Daquis will be back to assert her leadership for the HD Spikers, who are looking to pull off a gigantic conquest that would send the Cargo Movers crashing back to earth.

Head coach George Pascua said if they would come up with superb blocking and airtight floor defense, winning over F2 Logistics will be very possible.

“Our offense is always there,” said Pascua, the genius behind Petron’s historic 13-0 sweep of the PSL All-Filipino Conference two years ago.

“We have to put premium on our blocking and floor defense if we want to win over a very talented and disciplined team like F2 Logistics.”

But the Cargo Movers appear invincible.

After dropping a single set to Petron, F2 Logistics rammed through its foes like a runway train dominating Sta. Lucia, Cocolife, Generika-Ayala and Victoria Sports-UST in lopsided fashion.

Maria Jose Perez of Venezuela was at the helm of that sizzling run as she dominated the attack zone together with Kennedy Bryan of United States and college star Kim Dy.

Middle blockers Aby Marano and Majoy Baron also play their role to perfection as well as libero Dawn Macandili and setter Kim Fajardo.

Although talks have it that the Cargo Movers are in for a perfect season, head coach Ramil de Jesus would rather aim for perfection than be complacent.

“It’s still a long way to go,” said the 10-time UAAP champion coach. “This is the PSL. All teams are tough and all players are very good. Although our goal is to win the crown, we have to be at our very best and work hard to achieve that target.”

De Jesus said Cignal has what it takes to win over them.

They, however, have to work doubly hard to remain unbeaten.

“Cignal has a strong middle game and good wing spikers,” he said. “We have to match their prowess and counter their attacks.”

De Jesus knows that it’s just a matter of time before they suffer their first loss.

But as much as possible, they want to enjoy this blazing run.
