Philippines gets World Bowling recognition
MANILA, Philippines — Philippine bowling is back in the world map.
Just as Filipina Krissiah Lyn Tabora won the women’s title in the 53rd Qubica AMF Bowling World Cup in Hermosillo, Mexico last week, the Philippines also regained the recognition of the governing body in the sport, World Bowling (WB).
The leadership dispute that hounded the sport in the country is history after legendary bowlers led by Paeng Nepomuceno and Bong Coo joined hands and rallied behind Philippine Bowling Federation (PBF) president Steve Hontiveros.
``We can now focus on winning more medals and titles for the country without any distractions,’’ said Coo, the World Cup champion in 1979 and winner of the World Championship four times.
Also rallying behind the PBF, which has Alex Lim as secretary-general, is former world champion Biboy Rivera.
Coo now serves as team manager of the Philippine team, which seeks to continue Tabora’s winning ways when they vie in the World Championships in Las Vegas from Nov. 25 to Dec. 4.
Coo was at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex last Friday along with Nepomuceno, the only bowler to win the World Cup four times (1976, 1980, 1992 and 1996), and Tabora.
Together, they presented to Philippine Sports Commission chairman William Ramirez the World Cup trophy and a certification from World Bowling, recognizing the PBF as member.
The PBF also enjoys the recognition of the Asian Bowling Federation, the Philippine Olympic Committee and the PSC.
Tabora is the fifth bowler to win the World Cup after Nepomuceno, Coo, Lita dela Rosa (1978) and CJ Suarez (2003).
For her World Cup victory, Tabora has been upgraded by the PSC chairman to elite status, and from now on will receive a monthly allowance of P40,000 from P28,000.
``It will inspire me to work harder and hopefully win more medals in future meets,’’ said Tabora.
The 26-year-old pulled off a stunning win in Mexico at the expense of the seasoned Rocio Restrepo of Colombia, a four-time Pro Tour champion, 249-222, to earn a finals date with Malaysia’s Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman.
