Perkins, Teng get maximum deals; Romeo trade up?

Nelson Beltran - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Former La Salle teammates Jason Perkins and Jeron Teng, the Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, in the recent PBA Rookie Draft, are both assured of P8.55-million three-year maximum contracts with Phoenix Petroleum and Alaska Milk, respectively.

Perkins signed his pact the other day while Teng has reached an agreement with the Alaska management for the same package worth P150,000 a month in the coming season, P225,000 in 2018-19 and P337,500 in 2019-20.

Teng, however, has to await the return of Alaska top official Dickie Bachmann from the US for the formal contract-signing.

Meanwhile, right after the draft, top pick Christian Standhardinger and No. 2 Kiefer Ravena had reached agreements with San Miguel Beer and NLEX, respectively.

Still in the negotiation process is Blackwater with No. 3 pick Raymar Jose.

Done is Blackwater’s contract-extension deal with veteran player Allein Maliksi, who is guaranteed of a maximum basic pay of P10.08 million for the next two years.

Maliksi, a trade recruit by Blackwater from Star, is among the candidates for the national team that plays Japan and Chinese Taipei late this month in the opening window of the FIBA Asia World Cup qualifiers.

Standhardinger, Ravena, Jose, Perkins and Teng were the marquee picks in the 2017 PBA Draft where all 43 out of 44 hopefuls were drafted.

Teams have until today to present a tender offer to their draftees. Otherwise, they will lose signing rights on the players.

Usually, only the top three picks get the maximum deal in the league. Phoenix and Alaska underscored their high regards on Perkins and Teng in giving them the max.

In another development, news of a Terrence Romeo trade came out yesterday.

The Meralco Bolts team is said to be the latest ball club that expressed interest in acquiring the GlobalPort hotshot through a trade deal.

“There are several teams really interested on Terrence. It’s not surprising since Terrence is Terrence – a scoring machine. But there’s no formal talk. All speculation (Puro pahaging lang),” said a source.
