Coxsedge, Baldwin, Reyes headline 6th NBTC Coaches Convention

MANILA, Philippines – The 6th NBTC Coaches Convention takes place from November 6-8, 2017 at the Ynares Center in Pasig City.

The Coaches Convention is a three-day seminar and workshop where basketball coaches from all over the Philippine archipelago are taught the latest techniques and developments by some of the brightest minds working the game today.

Included among the powerhouse cast of speakers and teachers in the three-day event are Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Executive Director Renauld “Sonny” Barrios, national team head coach Chot Reyes, current National University assistant Paolo Layug, current Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin, Chappy Callanta, Jimmy Alapag, Noli Ayo, and guest Australian coach Brett Coxsedge. Also giving a talk about communication and motivating in sports is journalist Quinito Henson.

Coxsedge, a renowned Australian basketball coach will be talking and teaching about coaching multi-skilled players, creating a competitive training environment and developing a defensive style of play.

“We are excited to have someone of the caliber of Coach Brett teaching in the NBTC,” said NBTC director Eric Altamirano. “The outside perspective is crucial also to the development of the game.”

“For NBTC, our main thrust is to develop skills, build characters, and raise leaders not only among the players but also the coaches. The coaches play a vital role in the development of the young players especially in the grassroots level,” added Altamirano. “So it is important that we also equip them with the tools, mindset, and learnings on how to be a more well-rounded coach.”

Since the NBTC Coaches Convention was started six years ago, the program has grown. Altamirano bared that some 1,500 basketball coaches will be in attendance.

“Not many coaches get to fly abroad to learn first-hand from the top-minds in the world. Because of technology, coaches can now watch videos online. But first-hand experience where you are engaged with the teacher is invaluable experience,” added the veteran coach, who was also once a national player.

“Through the years, we noticed the growth in the coaches. Before, coaches from the provinces teach in a ‘bara bara’ style but it is different now. The approach is different not only in Xs and Os but also how they mentor the players. And outside the usual big cities like Manila, Cebu and Davao, we’ve seen the improvement of Olongapo and Cagayan De Oro to name a very few. In the long run, this can only be good for the game for a great many people.”

The NBTC Coaches Convention is sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation and is an official grassroots program of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
