Belingon hoping win streak leads to title shot

Kevin Belingon over Reece McLaren | ONE Championship

MANILA, Philippines — Last week’s victory makes it three straight for Kevin Belingon. And he hopes that that’s enough reason for him to once again contend for the ONE Championship’s bantamweight strap.

“I’m now on a three-bout winning streak. It’s my first time in ONE, and it’s against two former title contenders,” the Baguio City native said. “I really hope that this victory will lead me to a rematch with Bibiano [Fernandes].”

Belingon dismantled Reece McLaren in last Friday’s Kings and Conquerors showpiece in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Team Lakay did it in the most Team Lakay way possible: swift and strong.

The 29-year-old fighter tagged the Aussie with his right fist and then followed through with repetitive smashes on the ground.

“I was surprised that he stood in front of me and tried to test my stand-up skills. We all know that I am comfortable in the stand-up department, so I obliged,” Belingon said. “When he reached in for a left hook, I launched my right hand.”

“I saw an opportunity to get the finish when I dropped him with my right hand. He was trying his best to get back up, so I put tremendous amount of pressure by pinning him down,” he continued.

Belingon’s last preys were no pushovers: Muin Gafurov and Toni Tauru, whom he both beat convincingly. — Denison Rey A. Dalupang
