Frayna stays in Top 10
MANILA, Philippines - Janelle Mae Frayna lost to Hungarian GM Attila Czebe for the second time but bounced back with a victory over Belgian Tim Peeters to stay in the top 10 going into the ninth round of the Brugse Meesters 2017 in Brugge, Belgium Wednesday night.
Frayna, who dropped to fifth spot with 10 others with six points, was playing second seed GM Alexandre Dgebuadze of Belgium in the last round at presstime with hopes of pulling off a victory.
GM Jayson Gonzales, Frayna’s coach and trainer, also pooled six points after downing Englishman Andrew Stone. He was battling Dutch Eelke DeBoer in the final round.
Dutch IMs Lucas Van Foreest and Thomas Beerdsen lead the way with seven points.
Frayna’s European campaign is bankrolled by the Phl Sports Commission, National Chess Federation of the Phl, FEU’s Aurelio Montinola, The Philippine STAR’s Miguel Belmonte and Edward Go, and backed by Senate President Koko Pimentel and Bobby Ang.
