MANILA, Philippines - Air Force outplayed erstwhile unbeaten Megabuilders in the fifth and final set and eked out a pulsating 25-16, 25-20, 23-25, 26-28, 15-12, yesterday to end its elimination round campaign on a bright note in the men’s division of the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the Filoil Arena in San Juan.

Niño Jeruz and Edwin Tolentino led the way with 20 and 19 hits, respectively, while Howard Mojica and Jeffrey Malabanan chipped in 14 and 13 points as the Jet Spikers booked their fifth victory against two defeats while dealing the Volley Bolts their only loss after six straight wins.

Earlier, Army downed Gamboa Coffee Mix, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19, to nail its fourth win against three defeats and ensure itself of at least a playoff for the fourth and last semis seat.

The Coffee Spikers closed their campaign with a 1-6 mark.

In women’s play, University of the Philippines turned back the Power Smashers, 25-17, 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-11, for a closing 2-5 card.

The Power Smashers fell to 1-6.

Meanwhile, Perlas-BanKo and BaliPure seek to stay in the semifinal hunt as they take on Creamline and defending champion Pocari Sweat at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively, at the close of the elimination round today.

The BanKo Spikers and the Water Defenders are tied at fourth spot on 3-3 (win-loss) records and a win will keep them in the hunt for a spot in the best-of-three semis.

Creamline, for its part, will be gunning for a sweep after stringing together six straight victories while Pocari, which is seeking its fourth title since joining the 14-year-old league last year, is currently at second spot with a 5-1 slate and should be going all out for a ego-boosting win entering the playoff round.

In the nightcap, Hair Fairy Air Force turned back Adamson-Akari, 25-22, 25-16, 25-21, to clinch the third semis spot with a 5-2 mark.
