MANILA, Philippines - Unbeaten Lyceum of the Philippines University guns for a record fifth straight win as it tangles with a Mapua side at the resumption of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan today.
Three seniors matches are on tap in another busy day in the league after it called off yesterday’s NCAA on Tour games at San Sebastian College due to typhoon Gorio.
“Due to bad weather and the suspension of classes, the NCAA decided to cancel yesterday’s scheduled games,” said NCAA management committee chairman Fr. Glyn Ortega, OAR, of Season 93 host SSC.
The postponed games, featuring SSC vs Jose Rizal U in the seniors and juniors divisions, will be re-scheduled at the latter part of the first round elims.
But action is expected to be fierce today as the Pirates try to extend their impressive win run to five against the Cardinals, who could only post a win in four games. They clash at 2 p.m.
In other matches, Perpetual Help (1-2) and Emilio Aguinaldo College (2-2) collide at 12 noon while Arellano (2-2) and St. Benilde (1-2) face off at 4 p.m.
The Pirates are off to their best start since joining the league six years ago, racking up four wins in row, beating teams tipped to contend for this year’s crown, including Jose Rizal, San Sebastian, last year’s second place Arellano U and reigning titlist San Beda.
CJ Perez and twins Jaycee and Jayvee Marcelio continue to dish out big games for Lyceum with the bench also stepping up to help sustain the Pirates’ hot start, making them the heavy favorites against the struggling Cardinals.
