Kaya nips Ilocos, wrests PFL lead

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Kaya FC Makati streaked to its fifth consecutive victory via a 2-1 edging of Ilocos United as it regained the Philippines Football League lead at the University of Makati Stadium Sunday night.

Jordan Mintah struck nine minutes from time to help Kaya sustain its run and go back-to-back over Ilocos counting its 5-2 verdict four days before also at home.

With 26 points overall, Kaya dislodged FC Meralco Manila (24) at the top of the table while Ilocos absorbed its ninth loss against three draws and remained at the cellar with three markers.

“It was a tough game. It’s really difficult to play back-to-back games against the same team. This was the kind of match where we struggled to create opportunities and Ilocos really played well defensively,” said Kaya coach Noel Marcaida.

“But I’m really happy for the Kaya players, they responded well after that goal scored by Ilocos. We’ll take it. Three points, number one in the league so far, so we’re happy with the result,” he added.
