Meralco-Cebu draw puts Sparks on top
MANILA, Philippines - FC Meralco Manila and Global Cebu FC battled to a 2-2 draw in a result that allowed the Sparks to regain the lead in the Philippines Football League yesterday at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
James and Phil Younghusband scored in each half but Daryl Roberts cancelled them out with a brace as Manila and Cebu split the spoils in the marquee match-up for top spot between two high-powered sides.
The Sparks improved to 24 points, overtaking idle Kaya FC Makati (23 at presstime) while the Global booters hiked their tally to 22 and solo third.
Meralco picked up a point again after absorbing a heavy 0-7 loss to Ceres Negros – its first setback in the league – also at home a week ago.
Skipper James Younghusband was at the right place at the right time, cleaning up Joaco Canas’ shot that hit the post to deliver the opening goal at the 29th minute. Global drew level five minutes later with Roberts completing a solo finish.
