Phoenix escapes Alaska in thriller
MANILA, Philippines — “What a game.”
That’s how Phoenix’s Ariel Vanguardia summarized all the cardiac moments that transpired on Saturday’s PBA nightcap.
Phoenix survived Alaska, 95-93, behind the raging-bull play of import Eugene Phelps. He, too, hit the nail in the coffin with a lefty layup to beat the buzzer.
But according to Vanguardia, it’s all thanks to the Fuel Masters’ veterans, who managed to stand their ground when the Aces threatened to pull the rug.
“They showed heart and made the crucial plays down the stretch. It was like a playoff game,” the former ABL coach said. “Credit to Alaska for giving us a hell of a game.”
Former Alaska guard RJ Jazul led the locals with 15 markers. John Wilson chimed in 13 more. Phelps, on the other hand, finished with 29 to go with 14 rebounds.
“It was my fault to run with (Alaska) to start the second quarter. Tinalo kami sa takbuhan nung first half. We were able to execute in the second half,” Vanguardia closed.
Phoenix will try to ride on their 2-0 start when they take on the ever-offensively potent Star Hotshots.
The Fuelmasters join Yeng Guiao’s Road Warriors atop the Governors’ Cup standings.
