Freddie eyes probe on judge
GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao’s trainer wants the female judge in last Sunday’s “Battle of Brisbane” be placed under microscope.
Boxing judge Waleksa Roldan of New York must have watched another fight to score the WBO welterweight title clash, 117-111, for Jeff Horn.
The two other judges, Chris Flores of Arizona and Ramon Cerdan of Argentina both had it 115-113, also for the Australian schoolteacher.
Bob Arum, the fight promoter, said the two identical scores gave a better but not necessarily accurate reflection of the fight, meaning they gave Horn seven rounds and Pacquiao five.
If they had given Pacquiao an extra round they would have scored it a draw, which may be more acceptable to many.
It was Roldan’s scoring that drew the ire of many.
At 117-111, it means she gave Horn nine of the 12 rounds, and Pacquiao;s tranier Freddie Roach said that was quite unacceptable for an action-packed fight that could have really gone either way.
“That was hard, sometimes I think people need to be investigated,” Roach told the Daily Telegraph after the bloody contest that had both fighters bleeding most of the way.
Roach said the WBO should take a closer look at Roldan’s scoresheet.
