Hawkeyes seek No. 6 vs Couriers

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  Cignal HD hopes to sustain its winning ways sans Davon Potts as it shoots for No. 6 against Wangs Basketball in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig today.

Potts topscored for the Hawkeyes with 15 points in their 93-75 win over the Racal Motors Alibaba last week in what served as a fitting sendoff for the 24-year-old San Beda Lion, who has completed the seven-game requirement to be eligible for this year’s PBA draft.

Under NCAA rules, players are barred from suiting up in other leagues once the eligibility requirement is met.

Without Potts, the Hawkeyes, toting a 5-2 card, will pin their hopes on Jason Perkins, Raymar Jose and Pamboy Raymundo as they face the surging Couriers at 3 p.m.

“I’ll emphasize on them to work on their consistency,” said Cignal HD coach Boyet Fernandez. “Wangs is doing great. It’s a different Wangs team.”

The Couriers, with Michole Sorela taking charge in the clutch, pulled off a shock 93-84 win over the Alibaba the last time out to improve to 3-2.

Chris Bitoon, Robert Herndon, Christian Dechavez and Timothy Habelito also did their share in the victory and are expected to deliver again versus the Hawkeyes.

“We’ll rely on our team effort and our desire to win. We also hope to display the same defensive effort against Racal where the players did not allow easy shots from their opponent,” said Wangs mentor Pablo Lucas.

Centro Escolar University, meanwhile, seeks to stretch its win run to three after back-to-back losses as it tangles with winless AMA Online Education at 5 p.m.

The Scorpions, who have been drawing big games from Rod Ebondo, Christian Uri and JK Casiño, are fancied over the Titans, who have dropped their first four games.
