MANILA, Philippines -- During the halftime break, Tanduay head coach Lawrence Chongson thought his Rhum Masters needed a few nudges to get back on track against Gamboa.
And his wards' response? A league-best 53-point third quarter en route a 113-71 blowout of their foes on Tuesday's PBA D-League Foundation Cup.
Trailing 34-37 at the first half, Tanduay went berserk and opened the third with 23 straight points. The Rhum Masters capped off the frame with an 87-49 advantage.
"'Yung energy na hinahanap ko sa kanila wala noong first half eh. So 'yun lang, kaunting parinig, kaunting reminders. I said let's look forward at bawi na lang kami," Chongson told shortly after the game.
Tanduay, for its part, did not disappoint as they shot 81 percent from the field and had 14 assists as a team.
They also clamped Gamboa down to just 12 points on five made shots.
"Knowing 'yung potential ng team ko, supposedly dapat mas may advantage kami sa kanila," Chongson added.
Paul Varilla's 15 points in the pivotal period almost single-handedly led the Rhum Masters' record-setting explosion.
Tanduay will look to extend their three-game winning streak against the Flying V Thunder on Thursday, July 6. -- Randell Angelo B. Ritumalta
