Pinoy cue artists crash out of W Cup

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  Filipino pair Johann Chua and Carlo Biado bombed out of the 12BET World Cup of Pool after surrendering a numbing 2-9 loss to China in Saturday’s quarterfinal round at York Hall in London.

On-form Chinese Wu Jiaqing and Dang Jinhu dished out a near-flawless shotmaking, keeping Chua and Biado glued to their seats the whole time to cruise to the one-sided win and dash the Filipinos’ title aspirations in the $250,000 event.

The Chinese set up a semis duel with Austria’s Mario He and Albin Ouschan, who edged England Team B in their side of the quarterfinals, 9-7.

The other Last-4 pairing pits holder Ko Pin Yi and Chang Yu Lung of Chinese Taipei, who aims to become the first back-to-back winner in the 32-team tourney, against USA’s Shane van Beoning and Skyler Woodward.

The Taiwanese clobbered Japan, 9-2, while the Americans outclassed Finland, 9-4, back in the Last-8.

Chua and Biado fell three victories short of their quest to capture a fourth crown for the Philippines after the 2006 and 2009 triumphs of legendary Bata Reyes and Django Bustamante and the 2013 feat of Lee Van Corteza and Dennis Orcollo.

In the opening round of the 32-team tourney, Chua and Biado came back from a 2-4 hole before prevailing over Waleed Majid and Bashar Hussain of Qatar, 7-4, then outsteadied Holland’s Niels Feijn and Nick Van den Berg, 7-5, to reach the quarters.
