WGM Frayna seeks funds for Euro campaign

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Janelle Mae Frayna, the country’s first Woman Grandmaster (WGM), will soon campaign in Europe to improve her rating and at the same time pursue her dream to break into the world’s Top 10.

Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, Frayna’s coach, said they are now conducting a series of simultaneous matches and clinics to raise funds for Frayna’s campaign in the European chess circuit.

It starts with a 30-player simul today at Olongapo City Hall.

“The aim of this event is for the chess development and awareness of the youth especially the girls as well as to raise funds for her (Frayna) European campaign,” said Gonzales in a statement.

“She is embarking on this journey to reach the Top 10 in the world in the women’s rankings in the next two to four years,” he added.

The simul is organized by Joel Villanueva together with Raymundo Espiritu and David Bayarong, hosted by Olongapo Mayor Rolen Paulino, and backed by Rep. Jeffrey Khonghun of Zambales, MOCCI chairman Ruben De Guzman, Harben Panoy and Vice- Mayor Aquilino Cortez.

Frayna, a two-time UAAP MVP and three-time UAAP champion who recently graduated Cum Laude in Psychology, will also hold a chess clinic for the youngsters.
