Frayna seeks Top 10 world ranking
MANILA, Philippines – Janelle Mae Frayna, the country's first ever chess Woman Grandmaster (WGM), is eyeing to embark on a European tour with hopes of not only improving her rating but also to gain a chance at making it in the top 10 in the women's rankings.
Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, Frayna's coach, said they are now conducting a series of chess simultaneous matches and clinics to raise funds for his ward to participate in the European chess circuit.
It starts with a 30-player simul Tuesday at the second floor of the Olongapo City Hall.
"The aim of this event is for the chess development and awareness of the youth especially the girls as well as to raise funds for her (Frayna) European campaign," said Gonzales in a statement.
"She is embarking on this journey to reach the top 10 in the world in the women's rankings in the next two to four years," he added.
The simul is organized by Joel Villanueva together with Raymundo Espiritu and David Bayarong, hosted by Olongapo Mayor Rolen C. Paulino, and backed by Rep. Jeffrey Khonghun of Zambales, MOCCI chairman Ruben De Guzman, Harben Panoy and Vice- Mayor Aquilino Cortez.
Frayna, a two-time UAAP MVP and three-time UAAP champion who recently graduated Cum Laude in Psychology, is also holding clinics the same day.
