MANILA, Philippines - Puerto Princesa Mayor Luis Marcaida III will lead local and foreign dignitaries in the “Pilipinas International Beach Sports Festival” which finally comes off the wraps today with the staging of the polo event at 9 a.m.

Colorful opening ceremony showcasing the island’s rich tradition will usher in the three-day competition divided into two major events – the second Pilipinas Open Water Swim and the fourth Pilipinas International Beach Water Polo competitions.

Marcaida said the twin internatiobal competitions spread over three days will give the people of Puerto Princesa the “opportunity to welcome both local and foreign participants and treat them to world-class Filipino hospitality.”

Top athletes from the United States, Canada, Russia, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, Singapore and the Philippines are seeing action.

The Beach Water Polo event is now on its fourth series.

It is water polo played on any beach with a 10m x 15m playing field and a depth of at least 2m. Each team shall have three field players and one goal keeper playing inside the field.

Teams shall be playing for two halves of eight minutes each. The objective, like any other ball games, is to score as many goals as possible.

For this year, it will be a three-day competition with 10 men’s teams and three women’s teams competing for the trophy.

In the men’s category, there are four international teams and six local teams.

The international teams are composed of players from USA, Canada, Russia, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China and Singapore.
