Torres ranks 9th overall in KTM RC Cup
MANILA, Philippines - Ralph Kenneth Torres held his own against top riders from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, China and Thailand, finishing ninth overall in a field 26 in the KTM RC Cup Asia at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia recently.
The 18-year-old racing protége, who didn’t see action in the first round, vied in the Orange Class for the first time and bucked the odds, including his his limited practive time and lack of familiarity with the track.
Starting in fifth position in the grid in Race 1, Torres grabbed the early lead from top contenders Ibrahim Norrodin, Ahmad Idham Khairuddin and Izam Ikmal Izamli. He posted the best Race 1 lap time of 2:35.218 and placed fifth in the standings after two rounds.
Torres eventually ranked ninth overall among the 26 competitors in the two categories of the Cup, a remarkable achievement given his absence in the first round of the race.
“It was a great weekend for me and for my team for having a podium finish for both races, especially since it’s only my first race in the KTM RC Cup Asia,” said Torres in a Facebook post.
The KTM RC Cup Asia featured two class categories where contenders competed in two races for the second of five rounds of the Cup held at the 5.543-km Sepang Circuit, putting premium on the KTM “Orange” Class, which aims to encourage young talents into becoming future world champions.
