Sadorra falls, finishes tied for fifth

Julio Sadorra

MANILA, Philippines - GM Julio Sadorra fell to sixth seed GM Wang Hao of China in 33 moves of a Nimzo-Indian duel and finished tied for fifth spot at the end of the Asian Continental Chess Championship in Chengdu, China last night.

Sadorra lost his way in the opening and paid dearly for it as Wang gave up a pawn to force the US-based Filipino chesser into a cramped position that the latter translated into a full point.

Wang eventually finished tied for first with fellow Chinese GM Bu Xiangzhi, who downed Kazalh GM Rinat, Jumabayev with seven points apiece.

Top seed GM Yu Yangyi of China and fifth pick GM Santosh Gujrathi Vidit of India split the point to wind up at joint third with 6.5 points apiece.

Sadorra fell from a share of first to a group at No. 5 with six points each including GM Wei Yi of China, GM Tsegmed Batchuluun of Mongolia and several others as eight players who could potentially catch up were still playing at press time.

If Sadorra ends up with the best tiebreak score, he will clinch the fifth and last slot to the World Cup set this September in Batumi/Tbilisi, Georgia.
