No hometown advantage for Horn, says Pacquiao camp

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao will be defending his WBO welterweight champion against Jeff Horn at the latter’s hometown of Brisbane, Australia.

And the Filipino icon’s camp is totally fine with it, with Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz saying they’re not at a disadvantage despite fighting at the opponent’s turf.

In a report by The Sydney Morning Herald’s Phil Lutton, Koncz expressed confidence that fans who will troop to the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane—the venue for the July 2 bout—will be cheering for Pacquiao at the opening bell.

"And I don't think there's a hometown advantage here,” Koncz said.

“We'll see on July 2 – I think the crowd will be favoring Manny. It's going to be a great experience not only for us but the city. The rest of the world will see that,” he added.

Suncorp has a seating capacity of over 50,000, and it would be safe to assume that a significant portion of the crowd will be rooting for Horn.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, previously said it gives him extra motivation to put on a show in front of such a huge crowd.

Koncz, for his part, said fighting in Australia is potentially the first of many stops worldwide for Pacquiao, whom he insisted continues to draw huge crowds wherever he fights—even outside the United States.

"We want to be ambassadors for boxing here. We don't really plan on going back to America unless there's a tremendous financial opportunity. Manny is one of the few boxers that can go from country to country," Koncz continued.

"I think we'll get a lot of offers to go to different countries once they see how successful this fight is going to be."

After he deals with Horn, Pacquiao is looking to fight Amir Khan somewhere in the Middle East at the end of the year.
