We shall be missing Pres. Barack Obama

WHAT MATTERS MOST - Atty. Josephus B. Jimenez - The Freeman

Yes, he did. As President Obama leaves the White House, he is leaving a legacy that in-coming President Donald Trump may find hard to surpass, not even equal. The first African-American to occupy the Oval Office might not have been as great as Franklin Delano Roosevelt, nor as popular as John F. Kennedy and Ronald Regan. But to many Asians, blacks and Hispanics, he was much better loved and appreciated than George Bush. He broke barriers, did the unprecedented and remained committed to the less privileged Americans. He left a better world and gave sterling examples of peace and reconciliation to humanity.

He is leaving a US economy that is much better, more vibrant and dynamic than the one he inherited from President Bush. More than eleven million jobs were added during his eight-year administration. More young Americans graduated from high school and college, as his government gave more money for student loans. His policy was to embrace, never to reject the LGBT, the minorities, the immigrants and the veterans. He focused on health care, albeit his Obamacare generated a lot of controversy, but he stood firm in giving opportunity for medical and hospital services more for the less privileged. He was a true Democrat all through his term and he remained faithful to his credo "Yes, We Can."

Presiddent Obama took good care of the environment. He cut by more than fifty percent the US dependence on imported oil and gas. His government more than doubled the volume in production and use of renewable energy as his government focused on the non-traditional sources of energy. On foreign affairs, his most important legacy was reopening diplomatic relations with Cuba, and on military matters, he withdraw more than eighty percent of US troops from Afghanistan. He was able to wrap up a milestone treaty with Iran that bound the Iranians to stay away from nuclear weapons. He was able to get Osama Bin Laden dead, which was truly symbolic of his uncompromising fight against global terrorism. During his watch, no terrorist group was able to launch a major attack in the USA. He kept America safe for eight years.

Above all, what matters most is that during his term, he was never involved in any personal controversy. Unlike Bill Clinton who was besieged with a series of sex scandals, President Obama's character remains unimpeachable. His wife, Michelle has been an amazing woman of dignity, and his two girls, Malia and Sasha proved to be amazing daughters. He is much loved even as his party, the Democratic Party lost a lot of grounds. He fought valiantly in all issues against a Republican-dominated Senate and House.

At the end of the day, what matters most is that he did as he promised. Yes, President Obama did. And we shall all miss him.
