Essentials for the Sinulog Grand Parade

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Sinulog Grand Parade is one of the most anticipated activities of Cebu’s grandest festival.

However, this is also the time when the city streets become a challenge for most, what with the big crowds, the pushing and shoving just to get a better view of the dancers, the difficulty in getting rides to different areas in the city, etc.

Although it is a fun activity in the streets that can be enjoyed with friends and family, joining the Sinulog Grand Parade needs preparation. You need to be equipped with essential Sinulog parade items to be able to survive it.

Here are some Sinulog essentials you should have when you brave the crowds tomorrow:

Umbrellas. Pagasa says it will be a rainy weekend so umbrellas are a must to protect against the rain. However, if it does not rain, umbrellas can also be your shield against the heat of the sun. The foldable ones are the most ideal to bring as these can be easily tucked away when not in use.

Hats and Caps. These are a good alternative for umbrellas if you choose to free your hands from holding someone while braving the Sinulog crowd. Native hats are available in almost every corner at a very low price during the grand parade. These are lightweight and are a good protection against the sun but are not really that sturdy against the rain. Make sure to apply sunscreen, too, so you will have added protection against the heat of the sun.

Towels and Fans. It is a must that you have face towels with you during the grand parade to wipe away perspiration. Fans are also a good help to keep the heat away. Remember, you will be braving crowds!

Bottled Water. It is very important to keep yourself hydrated in a very physical activity like the Sinulog Grand Parade. Because most of the streets will be closed for the parade, people have to walk for miles under the heat or rain in heavily crowded streets. It won’t be fun to faint out of exhaustion and dehydration in the middle of the street. For sure, there will be bottled water sold along the parade route. Make sure you buy the ones that are from trusted brands to make sure the water is clean. Or, you can just bring your own water!

Wet Wipes and Rubbing Alcohol. There is no escaping the pushing and shoving in different areas along the parade route. To keep yourself fresh and smelling good, be sure to bring a pack of wet wipes and rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer. These can also help during meal times to keep your hands clean.

Bags and Waterproof Pouches. Although it is advised not to bring a lot of things when you watch the grand parade, you should consider bringing a small bag that is preferably waterproof. This can be used to store the essential items you are bringing, as well as your cellphone or camera. Just make sure, though, that you protect your bag from snatchers!

Medicines. A headache or upset stomach would dampen your festival mood so it is best to bring medicine for such aches and pains. Bring anti-allergy meds too, just in case. There will be medical stations along the parade route but it is still best to be prepared. - Angeli Korina M. Dizon (FREEMAN)
